Human rights organisations have filed a complaint against Ghana at the ECOWAS Court of Justice accusing the country of assisting the United States in deporting migrants to unsafe countries under Washington's third country removal policy.
The complaint was submitted on behalf of 27 migrants out of at least 60 people transferred to Ghana since September. According to the petition many of them had already received legal protection in the United States but were deported from Ghana to their home countries within days despite the risks they faced.
The advocacy groups argue that Ghana violated both domestic and regional laws by facilitating removals to countries where deportees could face persecution torture or other serious harm.
The lawsuit seeks disclosure of the agreement between Ghana and the United States an end to future deportation arrangements and compensation of at least 100000 dollars for each affected migrant.
