Tamil Nadu Police have registered a case against Ashok Kumar, the brother of former DMK minister and Coimbatore South MLA V. Senthil Balaji, over allegations that he attempted to lure a TVK legislator with an offer of ₹35 crore to leave the ruling party.
The case follows a complaint filed by TVK MLA N. Ilaiyaraja, who alleged that he was repeatedly approached with financial inducements and pressure to defect from the party.
Police had earlier arrested five people in connection with the alleged conspiracy. During questioning, one of the accused reportedly claimed that he had met Ashok Kumar in Chennai before contacting the legislator and acted on instructions linked to him.
Investigators are examining electronic evidence, call records, financial promises and other material collected during the probe. Based on witness statements and preliminary findings, police have booked Ashok Kumar under multiple legal provisions, including sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The TVK government, led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, came to power with the support of Congress and other allies after the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The opposition DMK has continued to question the government's majority, keeping the state's political atmosphere charged.
