Over 900 Arrested as South Africa's Anti-Migrant Protests Spark Violence and Rights Concerns

South African police have arrested more than 900 people during nationwide anti-migrant protests, as demonstrations against undocumented migrants led to violence in several areas despite most marches remaining peaceful.

According to police, those arrested face charges ranging from immigration violations and public violence to robbery and harbouring undocumented migrants. In Johannesburg's Alexandra township, one person was killed during the looting of migrant-owned shops, while several others were injured.

The protests were organised by anti-immigration groups that had declared June 30 as a deadline for undocumented migrants to leave South Africa. Protesters argue that illegal immigration contributes to unemployment and pressure on public services, although researchers dispute those claims.

Authorities deployed additional police and military personnel in several provinces to prevent further unrest. President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned violence and vigilantism, stressing that while peaceful protest is a democratic right, intimidation and attacks on migrants will not be tolerated.

Human rights organisations say the unrest has forced thousands of migrants to flee their homes, with several African countries assisting in the evacuation of their citizens. Analysts warn that South Africa's economic and social challenges cannot be solved by targeting migrants and have called for long-term policy solutions instead.
