Panic broke out outside the world-famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi on Saturday morning after a Provincial Armed Constabulary (PSC) jawan's service rifle accidentally discharged at one of the temple's entry gates. Three people, including two devotees and a local resident, sustained injuries.
According to preliminary information, the incident occurred during routine security checks at the temple entrance. The INSAS rifle carried by the on-duty PSC personnel reportedly fired unexpectedly, triggering panic among devotees gathered near the gate.
Security personnel immediately secured the area and rushed the injured to a nearby hospital. Doctors said all three victims are in stable condition and none of the injuries are life-threatening.
Senior police officials, administrative authorities and security agencies reached the spot soon after the incident. The area was temporarily sealed as investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding the accidental firing.
Officials believe the discharge may have been caused by either a technical malfunction or human error, though no conclusion has been reached. The concerned jawan is being questioned, and the weapon may be sent for forensic examination.
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of India's most important religious sites, attracting thousands of devotees daily. Following the incident, security arrangements around the temple were further tightened, while officials confirmed that darshan continued without disruption.
Police said a detailed investigation is underway. If negligence is established, appropriate departmental and legal action will be taken against the concerned personnel. Authorities have also announced a review of existing security protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
