The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, approved 27 of the 29 proposals placed before it during a meeting held at the Chief Minister's official residence in Lucknow.
Among the key decisions was the approval to rename Jalalabad town in Shahjahanpur district as Parshuram Puri. The proposal, submitted by the Jalalabad Municipal Council, had been under consideration since 2018.
According to the state government, the process began after the municipal board passed resolutions supporting the name change in March 2018 and again in September 2023. The proposal was subsequently forwarded by the district administration to the state government, which then sent it to the central government. The Centre granted its approval on August 20, 2025, following which the state cabinet has now given its final clearance.
The government stated that the town is traditionally believed to be the birthplace of Lord Parshuram and is home to an ancient temple dedicated to him. It had already been officially recognised as Parshuram Janmabhoomi in 2022.
The cabinet also approved the Uttar Pradesh Startup Policy 2026, which aims to strengthen the state's innovation ecosystem over the next five years. The policy focuses on promoting entrepreneurship, attracting investment, generating employment and supporting startups from their early stages to expansion, with special emphasis on deep-tech and high-tech sectors.
Some local historical accounts suggest that the name "Jalalabad" was associated with Mughal emperor Jalaluddin Akbar, although different interpretations regarding its origin exist.
