The Hindu and Muslim parties involved in the temple-mosque disputes in Kashi (Varanasi), Mathura, and Sambhal have declined the Supreme Court's proposal for mediation, stating that they want the matters to be resolved through the judicial process. Representatives from both sides have said they would rather present their evidence and legal arguments before the courts than reach a negotiated settlement.
According to reports, the Supreme Court had suggested mediation under its "Samadhan Samaroh 2026" initiative, which encourages the amicable settlement of long-pending disputes through dialogue wherever possible. The proposal aimed to explore whether the parties could arrive at a mutually acceptable solution outside prolonged litigation. However, both the Hindu and Muslim sides conveyed that they are seeking a final and legally binding verdict from the courts.
The disputes relate to three major religious sites in Uttar Pradesh. These include the Gyanvapi Mosque and the Kashi Vishwanath temple complex in Varanasi, the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah dispute in Mathura, and the Shahi Jama Masjid dispute in Sambhal. Each of these cases has been the subject of multiple petitions and legal proceedings in different courts over the past several years.
Several legal issues remain under consideration, including ownership claims, the right to worship, archaeological surveys, and the interpretation of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991. Different courts, including district courts, the Allahabad High Court, and the Supreme Court, are hearing various petitions connected to these disputes.
Following the rejection of mediation, the cases will continue through the normal judicial process. The concerned courts will hear arguments, examine documentary and other evidence, and pass orders in accordance with the law. Legal experts note that the rejection of mediation does not affect the merits of the cases, and the judicial proceedings will continue as scheduled.
Although the mediation proposal has been declined at this stage, the option of an out-of-court settlement may still remain available in the future if both parties voluntarily agree to it. For now, however, both sides have made it clear that they want the disputes to be decided through court judgments, and the final outcome will depend on the ongoing legal proceedings.
