Heavy Monsoon Rains Flood Several Cities Across Uttar Pradesh

The southwest monsoon has become active once again across Uttar Pradesh, bringing widespread rainfall to several districts on Saturday. Heavy showers were reported from Gorakhpur, Bareilly, Agra, Varanasi, Pratapgarh, Prayagraj, Ballia and many other regions, severely affecting daily life. Waterlogging, traffic congestion and disruption of public movement were reported from several cities as continuous rain continued through the morning.

Gorakhpur witnessed one of the heaviest spells of rainfall. Roads across the city were submerged under knee-deep water, while several cars and two-wheelers were partially submerged. Residents faced major inconvenience as traffic came to a standstill in many areas. Poor drainage systems led to severe waterlogging in residential colonies and market areas.

In Varanasi, the rising water level of the River Ganga submerged several steps of the famous ghats, including Dashashwamedh Ghat. Authorities shifted the daily Ganga Aarti to a safer elevated platform as a precautionary measure. Barricades have been placed near the riverfront while officials continue to monitor the rising river level closely.

Pratapgarh also witnessed heavy rainfall that caused waterlogging in several residential areas and government offices, including the Superintendent of Police office. Overflowing drains and flooded streets created difficulties for commuters and local residents.

A major accident was narrowly avoided in Prayagraj after a drain collapsed during heavy rain, trapping a moving car inside it. Local residents and emergency teams rescued the vehicle. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.

Heavy rainfall also affected Bareilly, Agra and nearby districts where several low-lying areas remained flooded. Farmers welcomed the rain for paddy cultivation but also expressed concern over excessive water accumulation in agricultural fields.

Continuous rainfall in the Himalayan region has significantly increased the water level of major rivers, including the Ganga, Yamuna, Saryu, Ghaghara and Rapti. Authorities have issued flood alerts for vulnerable villages in Ballia, Barabanki and other riverbank districts. Disaster response teams have been kept on standby, and preparations are underway to shift residents if the situation worsens.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast more rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across several districts in the coming hours. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from rivers and waterlogged areas, and follow official weather advisories.

The state administration has directed all departments to remain on high alert. Pumps have been deployed to remove water from flooded localities, while relief and rescue teams continue monitoring the situation. Officials have appealed to the public not to spread rumours and rely only on verified information.

If rainfall continues over the next few days, flood conditions may worsen in several districts, making constant monitoring and public cooperation essential.
