Monsoon Session Begins Amid Opposition Protest

The ninth session of the 18th Lok Sabha commenced amid intense political confrontation. As soon as the House assembled, opposition MPs raised slogans and demanded discussions on the alleged NEET-UG paper leak, the Ram Temple donation theft case, inflation, unemployment, and other issues of public concern. Several members entered the House carrying placards and banners, disrupting proceedings.

Due to continuous protests, the Speaker adjourned the Lok Sabha till 12 noon after only a brief sitting.

Before the session began, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the media outside Parliament and urged all Members of Parliament to ensure meaningful, fact-based, and constructive discussions. He said that just as an active monsoon benefits the country, a productive Monsoon Session can strengthen democracy and national development.

The Prime Minister highlighted India's technological achievements, including progress in the private space sector, the country's green hydrogen-powered train, and India's economic growth. He also praised the achievements of young innovators and entrepreneurs.

The government is also set to introduce the National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026 in the Rajya Sabha, proposing legal protection for Vande Mataram similar to the National Anthem. If passed, intentional insult or obstruction during its singing could become a punishable offence.

Another major bill to be introduced in the Lok Sabha seeks to increase the sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges from 34 to 38. According to the government, the move aims to improve the disposal of pending cases and replace the ordinance issued earlier this year.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders held a strategy meeting before the session and agreed to raise several issues concerning the public. Political observers expect intense debates and important legislative decisions during the remaining days of the Monsoon Session
