New Delhi: The protest over the alleged paper leak continued for the 32nd consecutive day at Jantar Mantar on Tuesday, with thousands of demonstrators gathering at the site. Protesters raised slogans against the police after security personnel arrived in the morning. Although the area was cleared on Monday evening following the Parliament march, demonstrators regrouped later.
During the NDA Parliamentary Party meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the paper leak issue should not be politicized and assured that those responsible would face strict punishment.
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi demanded accountability, urging Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the Prime Minister, and the Home Minister to apologise to students and take responsibility.
Protest leader Abhijeet Deepke announced that no Parliament march would be held for now, alleging that police action during the previous protest left several students injured.
Sonam Wangchuk also decided to continue his hunger strike, saying that the police action had prompted him to withdraw his earlier decision to end the fast.
Several opposition leaders, including Akhilesh Yadav, Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Shashi Tharoor, Kapil Sibal, K.C. Venugopal, and Arvind Kejriwal, criticised the police action and demanded answers from the government.
Delhi Police has registered five FIRs in connection with the Parliament march, alleging rioting, damage to public property, and attacks on public servants. Investigations are underway using CCTV footage and social media evidence.
Meanwhile, MP Chandrashekhar Azad staged a protest inside the Parliament complex, demanding the resignation of the Education Minister and strict action in the paper leak case.
