During the Monsoon Session of Parliament on Wednesday, while opposition parties staged protests against the government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) chief Sharad Pawar and MP Supriya Sule at his office.
Photographs from the meeting showed Prime Minister Modi personally welcoming Sharad Pawar at the entrance of his office before the leaders held discussions in a cordial atmosphere. The leaders were also seen exchanging documents during the meeting.
The timing of the meeting has drawn significant political attention as the central government is preparing to introduce a delimitation-related bill during the ongoing Parliament session. Support from regional parties is expected to play an important role in the legislative process.
The Sharad Pawar-led NCP faction has previously indicated that it could consider supporting the proposal if the government provides a written assurance of a 50 percent increase in parliamentary seats across all states. MP Supriya Sule has also publicly reiterated this position.
Meanwhile, political circles continue to speculate about the future political strategy of the Sharad Pawar faction. However, no official statement has been issued regarding any alliance or political arrangement.
