The third day of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly's Monsoon Session witnessed intense political activity as discussions continued on the state's supplementary budget of *₹59,019 crore*. Alongside budget deliberations, concerns over repeated disruptions and legislative decorum dominated the proceedings
Assembly Speaker *Satish Mahana* expressed deep disappointment over the conduct witnessed in the House during recent sittings. Addressing members, he emotionally stated that his political career had reached its final phase and remarked that recent developments had made him question whether he was worthy of continuing in the Speaker's chair. His statement briefly changed the atmosphere inside the Assembly, drawing attention from both the treasury and opposition benches.
Mahana appealed to legislators across party lines to maintain the dignity of the House and respect parliamentary traditions. He stressed that disagreement is an essential part of democracy, but debates should remain within the limits of constitutional values, respectful language, and legislative discipline.
The Speaker's remarks came a day after opposition protests disrupted Assembly proceedings. Samajwadi Party MLA *Sachin Yadav* displayed a photograph of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inside the House, an act that the Chair considered a violation of Assembly rules. Following the incident, the Speaker suspended the MLA for the remainder of the Monsoon Session.
Commenting on the episode, Mahana said he had expected better conduct from the legislator and reiterated that Assembly rules apply equally to every member, irrespective of political affiliation. He emphasized that maintaining the dignity of the legislature is a collective responsibility.
Meanwhile, the House continued discussions on the supplementary budget presented by the Yogi Adityanath government. Opposition members also raised several public issues during the debate, while the Speaker repeatedly urged members to express their views peacefully and avoid unnecessary disruptions.
Political observers believe Mahana's emotional appeal was aimed at reminding all legislators—not just the opposition—of the importance of preserving democratic institutions and parliamentary traditions. The coming days of the Monsoon Session are expected to reveal whether the House returns to smoother functioning.
