The Monsoon Session of the Delhi Assembly began on Friday amid a tense political atmosphere, with sharp exchanges between legislators from the Aam Aadmi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party. The situation escalated inside the House when AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar and BJP MLA Ravi Negi became involved in a heated argument.
The verbal confrontation intensified when both legislators reportedly stood up from their seats and moved toward each other. Members from both parties intervened immediately and separated them before the situation could escalate further.
The incident drew a strong reaction from Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta. He expressed serious displeasure over the conduct of the legislators and stressed the importance of maintaining parliamentary decorum inside the House.
The Speaker warned that no member would be allowed to leave their seat and approach another member during a heated exchange. He also made it clear that the use of abusive or unparliamentary language would not be tolerated. Members speaking without permission could also face disciplinary action, he warned.
The political confrontation intensified further after Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Verma made a remark about Leader of Opposition Atishi. Verma alleged that Atishi had travelled to Goa while the Monsoon Session was underway. His remarks triggered further exchanges between the ruling party and opposition members.
As protests and disruptions continued, the Speaker ordered the removal of five AAP legislators from the House. The MLAs identified in the proceedings were Sanjeev Jha, Kuldeep Kumar, Vishesh Ravi, Jarnail Singh and Som Dutt. They were escorted out with the assistance of marshals.
The disruption continued even after the five legislators were removed. With the level of noise and protests increasing, the Assembly proceedings were adjourned until 2 p.m.
The Monsoon Session is expected to include discussions on several important legislative and administrative matters. The government is scheduled to introduce three Bills and table three reports of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India. The heated opening of the session has already set the stage for intense political exchanges in the days ahead.
The political confrontation was not limited to the floor of the Assembly. Outside the House, AAP legislators staged a protest inside the Assembly premises. They wore garlands made from ORS packets while raising allegations related to an alleged ₹650-crore medical scam in Delhi.
The AAP legislators demanded answers from the government over the allegations and used the demonstration to highlight what they described as serious concerns surrounding the city's medical system.
The developments inside and outside the Assembly reflect the growing political confrontation between the ruling BJP and the opposition AAP in Delhi. With several legislative matters scheduled to come up during the Monsoon Session, the coming days are likely to witness further political debates and disagreements.
