New Delhi:Tata Group is heading towards a major leadership transition after Tata Sons Chairman *N. Chandrasekaran* decided not to seek another term when his current tenure ends on February 20, 2027.
Chandrasekaran has informed the Tata Sons board that he will complete his existing tenure but will not offer himself for reappointment. He has also asked the board to decide on his successor soon so that the transition can be planned well in advance. ([Reuters][1])
The development comes after months of uncertainty over his proposed third term. The question of his reappointment had remained unresolved following differences within the Tata Sons board and concerns raised by Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata. ([India Today][2])
Decision on Third Term Remained Unresolved
Chandrasekaran's current term is scheduled to end in February 2027. Before his latest decision, the group had been considering extending his tenure for another five years.
However, the proposal did not move forward at the Tata Sons board meeting held on February 24, 2026. Reports indicated that concerns were raised over the performance of some newer businesses, capital deployment and broader strategic issues facing the group. ([India Today][2])
The inability to reach a consensus resulted in the leadership question remaining unresolved for several months.
Chandrasekaran Ends the Uncertainty
After nearly six months without a final resolution, Chandrasekaran has now decided not to seek another term.
He has asked the board to begin the succession process soon, stressing the importance of leadership clarity as several major strategic projects remain at critical stages.
A clear succession plan is also considered important for employees, investors, business partners and other stakeholders associated with the group. ([Reuters][1])
### Tata Trusts Will Have a Key Role
Tata Trusts holds around 66% of Tata Sons, making the trusts highly influential in the group's governance and leadership decisions.
The selection of Chandrasekaran's successor is therefore expected to be closely watched, particularly because the leadership change could influence Tata Group's future strategic priorities.
The next chairman will inherit a group operating across sectors ranging from technology and automobiles to aviation, consumer products, manufacturing and new-age industries.
Key Issues Behind the Leadership Debate
Several strategic issues have featured in discussions within the group over recent months. These include the future structure of Tata Sons, the possibility of a listing, capital allocation, the performance of newer businesses and financial challenges related to Air India. ([India Today][2])
Questions surrounding the performance of some new businesses and the pace at which capital was being deployed were also reported during the February board discussions.
Chandrasekaran's Legacy at Tata Group
N. Chandrasekaran became Chairman of Tata Sons in 2017 after serving as the head of Tata Consultancy Services. He became the first chairman of Tata Group from outside the Tata family.
His tenure has been marked by several major strategic moves.
One of the biggest developments was Tata Group's acquisition of Air India in 2022, bringing the airline back under the group's control after several decades.
The group also pursued consolidation in the aviation sector and increased investments in areas such as semiconductors, electric-vehicle batteries and electronics manufacturing.
Tata also expanded its digital businesses and strengthened its presence in areas such as online retail and healthcare technology.
Challenge of Finding the Next Chairman
The appointment of Chandrasekaran's successor will be a major test for Tata Sons.
The next chairman will have to oversee large ongoing investments, manage the group's aviation operations, guide newer businesses and maintain coordination between Tata Sons, Tata Trusts and the boards of individual group companies.
The new leadership will also inherit several long-term strategic decisions that could shape the group's direction for years to come.
The immediate priority for the Tata Sons board will therefore be to identify a successor well ahead of February 2027 and ensure a smooth transition without creating uncertainty around the group's major businesses and projects.
