Iranian President Pezeshkian to Visit India for BRICS Summit Amid Middle East Tensions

New Delhi: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will visit India in September 2026 to participate in the *18th BRICS Summit* being hosted in New Delhi. India is chairing BRICS in 2026 and will host the summit as part of its presidency.

Pezeshkian's visit is significant as it comes at a time when tensions in the Middle East continue to remain an important concern for the international community. Regional security, diplomacy and the wider impact of the situation on energy and global economic stability are expected to remain important areas of discussion.

 Pezeshkian to attend BRICS Summit

The Iranian President will represent Iran at the BRICS summit in New Delhi. Leaders of BRICS member countries are expected to discuss a range of issues, including economic cooperation, trade, investment, development, energy, technology and international coordination.

The summit is being held at a time of major changes in global politics and the international economic system. Strengthening cooperation among emerging and developing economies is expected to remain an important focus.

Visit comes amid Middle East tensions

The timing of Pezeshkian's India visit makes it particularly significant. Continuing tensions in the Middle East have implications not only for regional security but also for energy supplies, trade and the global economy.

Iran remains an important country in the region, and the visit could provide an opportunity for India and Iran to exchange views on regional developments and wider international issues.

Iran sees India as an important partner

Iran has indicated that it considers India an important and constructive partner in efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the Middle East and finding diplomatic solutions to regional challenges.

India has traditionally emphasized dialogue and diplomacy in dealing with international disputes. This approach could provide an important basis for discussions between the two countries during Pezeshkian's visit.

Bilateral relations may also be discussed

India and Iran could also discuss issues related to their bilateral relationship during the visit.

Trade, connectivity, energy cooperation, economic ties and regional cooperation are among the areas that could receive attention. The two sides may also discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in view of changing geopolitical conditions.

 Iran's role in BRICS

Iran is part of the expanded BRICS grouping. Pezeshkian's participation in the summit will therefore also highlight Iran's role within the broader grouping.

The BRICS platform could provide an opportunity for member countries to discuss issues affecting the Global South, including economic cooperation, development and reforms in international institutions.

Regional and global issues on agenda

The New Delhi summit is expected to cover global trade, economic cooperation, energy security, technological development and multilateral cooperation.

Given the current situation in the Middle East, regional peace and stability could also become an important subject of discussions. However, the final agenda and any agreements will depend on the official programme announced for the summit.

 Significance for India

The Iranian President's visit during India's BRICS presidency will be diplomatically significant for New Delhi. It could provide India with an opportunity to strengthen dialogue with Iran while also playing a constructive role on broader regional and international issues.

Pezeshkian's presence could further strengthen high-level engagement between India and Iran. The two sides are expected to exchange views on regional developments as well as areas of bilateral cooperation.
