A tragic road accident took place in Rajasthan's Jaipur district on Friday evening when a speeding SUV hit four members of the same family who were drying freshly harvested moong crops along the roadside in the Phagi area.
The accident occurred at around 7:30 pm on the Madhorajpura Road, approximately three kilometres from Phagi on the Sarmathura-Phalodi Mega Highway. The victims were reportedly working near their field when the SUV lost control and struck them.
Satyanarayan Kumhar, a resident of Dhamuniyon Ka Mohalla in Phagi, was drying moong crops that had been harvested from his field. His wife and two daughters-in-law were also helping him at the time of the accident.
The impact was severe and all four victims died at the spot. The collision threw the victims away from the point of impact, leaving the area in shock.
Police identified the deceased as Satyanarayan, his wife Manmauj and their two daughters-in-law, Amrita and Shimla.
Family left devastated
The tragedy has left the family facing an enormous loss. Amrita reportedly had a 15-year-old daughter, Priyanka, and a 13-year-old son, Himanshu.
The family had already experienced tragedy in the past. According to the information available, one of Amrita's young sons had died in a road accident several years ago.
The deaths of four family members in a single accident led to grief and anger in the area. Villagers gathered at the accident site and later outside the hospital where the bodies were taken.
Villagers demand compensation
Police transported the bodies to the mortuary of the Phagi sub-district hospital.
As news of the accident spread, a large number of villagers gathered outside the hospital and demanded compensation and financial assistance for the affected family.
The protesters later blocked the Jaipur-Bhilwara Mega Highway and staged a demonstration. The road blockade caused long queues of vehicles on both sides and disrupted traffic in the area.
Officials intervene
Police officials reached the site to control the situation. Deputy Superintendent of Police Anil Doria and Station House Officer Pushpendra Bansiwal attempted to persuade the protesters to end the demonstration.
The villagers, however, remained firm on their demand for compensation.
At around 10 pm, Additional Superintendent of Police Shivlal Bairwa and Sub-Divisional Officer Balbir Singh also reached the location and spoke with the protesters.
Following discussions with the administration, the situation was brought under control and efforts were made to restore traffic movement.
Police are continuing to investigate the accident. Officials are examining the circumstances surrounding the collision, including the vehicle's speed, possible loss of control and the role of the SUV driver.
The incident has also raised concerns about road safety and the risks faced by people working close to highways.
