Israeli and U.S. forces carried out a wave of airstrikes near Tehran on Monday April 6, 2026, killing more than 25 people and causing widespread damage, according to reports.
The strikes targeted multiple locations in and around the Iranian capital, including areas near Sharif University of Technology. Thick black smoke was seen rising near Azadi Square following the explosions, while low-flying jets were heard across the city for hours.
The Israel Defense Forces said it had completed a wave of strikes against what it described as “regime targets” in Tehran. Iranian media also reported damage to nearby buildings and a natural gas distribution site close to the university.
In response, Iran launched missile attacks targeting Israel and its Gulf Arab neighbours, escalating tensions across the region.
The strikes come amid growing pressure from Donald Trump, who had set a deadline for Tehran to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Separately, Iranian state media reported another airstrike in Qom, where at least five people were killed in a residential area. The exact targets of some strikes remain unclear.
The conflict has intensified in recent days, with both sides escalating military actions and civilian areas increasingly affected. Iran has not released comprehensive casualty figures or details of material losses in recent days, adding to uncertainty around the full impact of the ongoing strikes.
