Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday April 7, 2026 claimed that 14 million Iranians, including himself, have volunteered to sacrifice their lives amid escalating tensions with the United States.
The statement, shared on X, came just ahead of a deadline set by Donald Trump, who has warned of potential strikes on Iran’s power stations and bridges if Tehran does not ease its control over the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz.
“More than 14 million Iranian people have declared their readiness to sacrifice their lives,” Pezeshkian said, adding that he too remains prepared to give his life for the country.
The figure is significantly higher than earlier estimates reported by state media regarding volunteers, as the government continues efforts to mobilise public support during the conflict. Iran, with a population of around 90 million, has seen authorities encourage enlistment through media campaigns and direct messaging.
Analysts suggest the announcement may be aimed at projecting national unity and deterring potential U.S. military action. However, it also comes against the backdrop of domestic discontent, with sections of the population critical of the government’s past handling of protests and internal unrest.
The situation remains tense as diplomatic efforts stall and the risk of further escalation in the region continues to grow.
