Nepal Home Minister Resigns Amid Questions Over Investments, Second Exit in a Month

Nepal’s Minister of Home Affairs, Sudan Gurung, has resigned from his position less than a month after assuming office, becoming the second minister to exit the newly formed government led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah. Gurung cited growing questions regarding his investments and other related matters as the reason behind his decision.

In a statement shared publicly, the 38-year-old leader emphasized the importance of accountability and integrity in public life. He stated that moral responsibility outweighed holding onto power and added that public trust must remain paramount. Gurung took office on March 27 as part of the new administration.

The prime minister’s office confirmed that the resignation has been accepted, with Shah temporarily taking charge of the Home Ministry until a replacement is appointed.

Gurung had recently drawn significant attention after ordering the arrest of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak. The move was linked to an investigation into their alleged roles during a crackdown on youth-led protests that took place last year.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah, who rose to power on an anti-corruption platform, has positioned his administration as one focused on transparency and governance reforms. His relatively new political party secured a strong mandate in the recent parliamentary elections, raising expectations for clean leadership.

Earlier in the month, Shah had already dismissed Labour Minister Dipak Kumar Sah after allegations surfaced that he misused his position to appoint his wife to a key role in the national Health Insurance Board. The government has also established a five-member commission, led by a former Supreme Court judge, to investigate the assets of politicians and public officials as part of a broader reform agenda.

Nepal continues to face challenges related to corruption, currently ranking 109th out of 180 countries on the Corruption Perceptions Index. Gurung’s resignation adds to the growing scrutiny surrounding governance and accountability within the country’s political system.
