US Allows Iran to Play 2026 World Cup but Bars Individuals with IRGC Links
The United States has confirmed that Iran's national football team will be allowed to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but with strict conditions regarding who can accompany the squad. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that while Iranian players will face no restrictions, individuals with links to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps IRGC will not be granted entry.

Rubio clarified that the issue does not concern the athletes themselves but rather certain officials or associates who may attempt to enter the country alongside the team. He emphasized that those with connections to the IRGC would not be allowed, citing security concerns. Washington has designated the IRGC as a foreign terrorist organization.

US President Donald Trump also addressed the matter, stating that his administration does not intend to interfere with the participation of athletes in the tournament.

Iran’s place in the World Cup had come under uncertainty following the escalation of conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran earlier this year. Since Iran’s group-stage matches are scheduled to take place in the United States, questions were raised about whether the team would be permitted to compete.

Despite the uncertainty, Iranian officials have confirmed that preparations for the tournament are ongoing. Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani stated that all necessary arrangements have been made by the Ministry of Sports and Youth to ensure the team’s participation.

Meanwhile, a controversial suggestion that Italy could replace Iran in the tournament has been widely rejected. The proposal, made by a US envoy, argued that Italy’s strong football history justified inclusion despite failing to qualify. However, Italian officials dismissed the idea, insisting that World Cup participation must be earned through qualification on the field.

Iran secured its place in the tournament after qualifying for a fourth consecutive World Cup. Following the outbreak of conflict, the country requested that its matches be moved from the United States to Mexico, but this request was not accepted. Iran is now expected to proceed with its scheduled fixtures.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will begin on June 11 and will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
