Algeria’s World Cup preparations have taken a major hit as goalkeeper Luca Zidane is now doubtful for the tournament following a serious facial injury sustained during a club match in Spain.
The 27-year-old, who plays for Granada in Spain’s second-tier league, suffered a heavy collision with an opposing player during his team’s 4-2 home defeat to Almeria. The impact left him with a concussion, forcing him to leave the field early.
Medical examinations later confirmed fractures in both his jaw and chin. The club stated that the player, along with medical staff, will decide on the appropriate course of treatment, which could include surgery depending on the severity of the injury.
Zidane is expected to miss the remainder of the season, and his recovery timeline remains uncertain. This has raised serious concerns about his availability for the World Cup, which begins on June 11.
The son of former France football legend Zinedine Zidane, Luca has been Algeria’s first-choice goalkeeper. His potential absence would be a significant setback for the national team, especially with backup goalkeepers Anthony Mandrea and Melvin Mastil also currently sidelined due to injuries.
With limited time left before the tournament, Algeria now faces a challenging situation in securing a fit and reliable goalkeeper for the competition.
