The Oklahoma City Thunder delivered a commanding performance to defeat the Los Angeles Lakers 108-90, taking a 1-0 lead in their NBA Western Conference semifinal series.
Despite a game high 27 points from LeBron James, the Lakers were unable to keep pace with the defending champions, who controlled the contest for most of the game after an early push from Los Angeles.
Thunder dominate on both ends
Oklahoma City showcased a balanced attack and strong defensive discipline throughout the game. Chet Holmgren led the scoring with 24 points and added 12 rebounds, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Ajay Mitchell contributed 18 points each.
The Thunder’s defensive approach proved decisive, limiting the Lakers to their lowest playoff score since 2021. The strategy focused on forcing opponents out of their comfort zones and disrupting their offensive rhythm.
Lakers struggle despite strong start
The Lakers began the game brightly but lost momentum as the Thunder tightened their grip. LeBron James was efficient with his scoring, but lacked sufficient support to challenge Oklahoma City’s depth.
Rui Hachimura added 18 points, while Marcus Smart and Deandre Ayton chipped in with 12 and 10 points respectively. However, the team’s overall execution fell short against a disciplined opponent.
Head coach JJ Redick pointed to unforced errors as a major factor behind the defeat, stressing the need for better execution and attention to detail moving forward.
Series outlook
The result highlights the challenge facing the fourth-seeded Lakers as they attempt to upset the reigning champions in the best-of-seven series. Oklahoma City had already swept the regular-season meetings between the two teams, and Game 1 reinforced their dominance.
Game 2 will be crucial for the Lakers as they look to respond and level the series.
Pistons edge Cavaliers in East
In the Eastern Conference semifinal opener, the Detroit Pistons secured a 111-101 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Cade Cunningham led Detroit with 23 points, supported by Tobias Harris with 20 and Duncan Robinson with 19, including five three-pointers. Several Pistons players contributed in double figures, reflecting a strong team effort.
Cleveland mounted a second-half comeback after trailing by 17 points, but Detroit held firm in the closing stages to seal the win. Donovan Mitchell led the Cavaliers with 23 points, while James Harden added 22 points along with eight rebounds and seven assists.
Detroit, which advanced after a dramatic first-round comeback, will aim to maintain momentum and protect home court as the series continues.
