At least 24 people were killed and more than 50 others injured after a suicide car bomb attack targeted a train carrying soldiers in Quetta, the capital of Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province.
The attack occurred near a railway line, where a vehicle packed with explosives rammed into the passing train before detonating, causing severe destruction.
The separatist group Balochistan Liberation Army claimed responsibility for the bombing.
Images and videos shared online showed overturned train carriages, burning vehicles and thick black smoke rising into the air after the explosion.
Several nearby homes and buildings were also damaged by the powerful blast.
Emergency services rushed injured passengers to hospitals across Quetta, where authorities declared a medical emergency and ordered doctors and staff to remain on duty.
Security officials said many of the victims were security personnel travelling on the train, though civilians were also affected by the attack.
Pakistan has witnessed a rise in violence in recent months, particularly in Balochistan, where separatist groups have intensified attacks against government forces and infrastructure projects.
The region has also seen attacks targeting Chinese nationals and projects linked to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, a major infrastructure initiative connecting western China to Pakistan’s Gwadar port.
Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the bombing, calling it a cowardly act of terrorism.
He said Pakistan would continue efforts to eliminate terrorism and maintain national security.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident while security operations in the area have been intensified.
