Cuba Receives Chinese Rice Aid Amid Deepening Humanitarian Crisis
Cuba has received the first shipment of rice donated by China as the Caribbean nation struggles with worsening humanitarian and economic conditions caused by severe fuel shortages and tightening sanctions.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel confirmed that the first delivery of 15,000 tonnes of rice arrived at the port of Havana. The shipment is part of a larger Chinese donation expected to total around 60,000 tonnes.
Diaz-Canel publicly thanked China for its support and solidarity during what he described as a period of intense pressure on the Cuban people.

Cuba has been facing a growing crisis marked by fuel shortages, food scarcity and widespread electricity blackouts. Public transportation, hospitals and other essential services have been disrupted in several parts of the island.

The situation worsened after the administration of US President Donald Trump increased sanctions against Cuba earlier this year.
According to Cuban officials, restrictions on oil exports have sharply reduced the country’s fuel supply. Cuba currently depends heavily on imported oil to operate its power grid and transportation systems.
China has become one of Cuba’s key international partners in recent years. Alongside food aid, Beijing has also supported Cuba’s energy sector by donating solar panels to help modernise the country’s ageing electricity infrastructure.

The Cuban government has accused the United States of carrying out a “maximum pressure” campaign aimed at weakening the country economically and politically.
Trump has repeatedly criticised Cuba’s communist government and suggested stronger measures could be taken if political changes are not implemented on the island.

Tensions between Washington and Havana have continued to rise following new sanctions, diplomatic disputes and accusations related to human rights and political reforms.
Despite the economic hardship, Diaz-Canel said Cuba would continue strengthening its relationship with China and other international allies.
