More than 30 people were killed and around 200 others injured after violent clashes erupted between protesters and security forces in Pakistan-administered Kashmir (PoK).
The unrest began after authorities banned the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), a civil society group that has been leading demonstrations over economic and political grievances in the region.
According to police, JAAC supporters had gathered outside a hospital mortuary where the body of a group member killed in an earlier police shooting was brought.
Tensions escalated when security forces attempted to disperse the crowd.
Police alleged that some protesters responded by using automatic rifles, petrol bombs, and other weapons against security personnel, triggering a major confrontation.
The JAAC had called for a strike to protest the reservation of 12 out of 45 seats in the region’s legislative body for refugees ahead of elections scheduled for July 27.
The violence has further heightened tensions across the region.
