At least 15 people lost their lives in a major fire that broke out at a coaching centre in the Aliganj area of Lucknow. Several occupants reportedly became trapped inside the building during the incident.
According to eyewitnesses and local residents, the building's main office gate operated through a thumb-impression access system. When the fire erupted, a power and system failure allegedly caused the gate to lock automatically, preventing people from escaping.
The building is reportedly registered in the name of Virendra Shukla. Questions have also been raised over approvals granted in 2014 that allegedly converted the property from residential to commercial use.
Following the tragedy, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered a high-level investigation into the incident.
A two-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed, comprising IAS officer Amrit Abhijat and IPS officer Praveen Kumar.
The SIT has been directed to submit its report within seven days, examining safety standards, possible negligence and the circumstances that led to the deadly fire.
Authorities have completed rescue operations and further investigations are underway.
