New Delhi: A large-scale demolition drive began on Thursday morning in Delhi's Yamuna Bazar area as authorities moved against encroachments in the O-Zone region.
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has started demolishing more than 300 structures identified as illegal constructions along the Yamuna floodplain. Heavy police deployment has been made at the site to maintain law and order during the operation.
According to officials, the action follows directions issued by the Delhi High Court. Residents had been served notices by the DDA and district administration last month, asking them to vacate the area before the demolition process commenced.
Authorities stated that the drive is part of a broader initiative to remove unauthorized structures from flood-prone zones along the Yamuna River. The administration argues that such settlements pose serious risks during periods of flooding.
Affected families have been advised to move to nearby shelter homes arranged by the authorities. Demolition work is continuing under tight security arrangements.
