A fresh dispute has emerged between Iran and the United States over Article 5 of their recently signed memorandum of understanding. Both countries have accused each other of violating the agreement, raising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Article 5 of the June 17 agreement calls for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and guarantees safe passage for commercial vessels. It also places responsibility on Iran to facilitate secure navigation between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman for 60 days without additional charges.
The latest tensions escalated after a commercial vessel was attacked in the strait, prompting US military strikes. Iran denied responsibility for the attack but accused Washington of breaching the agreement through its military response.
Iran insists that the memorandum recognises its authority over managing the strait, while the United States argues that attacks on commercial shipping violate the terms of the agreement.
Analysts believe the dispute over control of the Strait of Hormuz remains a key obstacle to lasting stability and could have significant consequences for global energy markets and maritime trade.
