Ujjain Mosque Action Triggers Stone-Pelting, Tear Gas Firing

Tension was reported in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, on Monday before administrative authorities were scheduled to remove a portion of a mosque as part of a road-widening project. A section of the Shahi Mosque, measuring around 10 feet, has been identified as an obstruction to the proposed road alignment.

A large crowd gathered near the mosque before the action began. Security arrangements, including barricading, had been put in place in the area. According to the information available, some people in the crowd attempted to remove the barricades, following which a confrontation developed between the police and those present at the spot.

Stone-pelting was reported during the confrontation. Crime Branch woman inspector Pushpa Panchal was reportedly injured in the incident. Police subsequently used tear gas shells to bring the situation under control and prevent further escalation.

The incident took place during an ongoing effort to widen the road from Kanthal intersection to Gopal Temple in Ujjain. Under the Ujjain Master Plan 2035, the route has been proposed to be widened to 15 metres. A portion of the Shahi Mosque falls within the area identified for the road expansion and is therefore proposed to be removed.

Earlier on Monday morning, discussions were held between the administration and representatives of the Muslim community regarding the proposed action. Following the talks, some members of the community reached the site to assist with the removal of the section considered an obstruction. However, slogans and opposition to the action were reported at the site, after which the situation became tense.

The administration has been carrying out the road-widening process with the stated objective of improving movement and traffic management in the area. The route is significant because it connects the Mahakaleshwar Temple, Gopal Temple and the banks of the Shipra River.

The proposed road improvement is also being linked to preparations for the Simhastha 2028 religious gathering. Authorities are working on infrastructure and traffic arrangements in several parts of the city to facilitate the movement of visitors and pilgrims during major religious events.

After the incident, security arrangements were strengthened around the area. Police and administrative officials continued monitoring the situation and efforts were made to restore normalcy. Further action regarding the identified portion of the mosque is expected to proceed under administrative arrangements and security measures.
