Headline: High Court Rejects Pleas Over Ujjain Shahi Masjid

The dispute over the Shahi Masjid in Ujjain has reached an important legal stage amid preparations for Simhastha 2028. The Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court has dismissed two petitions challenging the Ujjain Municipal Corporation's proposed action to remove a portion of the mosque as part of a road-widening project.

The matter concerns the road connecting Kanthal with the Bada Gopal Temple area. Authorities are carrying out infrastructure and road-development projects in Ujjain ahead of Simhastha 2028, when a large number of devotees are expected to visit the city. The road-widening project has become the central issue in the dispute concerning the Shahi Masjid.

The petitioners, associated with the management of the mosque, challenged municipal notices related to the proposed removal. According to the court record, the mosque is registered as Waqf property. The petitioners argued that the proposed action would affect parts of the prayer hall, a minaret and the front portion of the religious complex, and raised constitutional concerns regarding their rights.

The court's order dated 9 September 2026 records that the municipal action was connected to widening the road up to 15 metres. The court considered the submissions made by both sides and noted that the authorities had followed the relevant legal procedure and had considered the objections raised by the petitioners.

While examining the matter, the court also referred to the upcoming Simhastha 2028 and the need for better facilities and traffic management during the event. The order noted the location of the property in relation to the Mahakaleshwar Temple and the Kshipra River, while considering questions of public safety and public interest.

The High Court ultimately found no grounds to interfere with the municipal action and dismissed both petitions. As a result, there is currently no stay from the High Court against the proposed removal of the obstructing portion for the road-widening project.

The dispute remains connected to the larger infrastructure preparations for Simhastha 2028. The administration has linked the road-widening work to traffic management and public facilities, while the mosque management challenged the proposed removal through the legal process.
