FIR Filed Against Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Over Police Clash

The political controversy surrounding the protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has intensified in Delhi. A fresh FIR has been registered against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over allegations of assaulting police personnel and obstructing them from performing their official duties.

According to the police, the case is linked to incidents that took place during Wednesday’s protest around Janpath and Jantar Mantar. Several opposition leaders and workers were taking part in the demonstration and were attempting to move towards Jantar Mantar. Police personnel stopped the protesters, citing law-and-order and public movement concerns.

The situation reportedly became tense after opposition leaders and police personnel confronted each other. A heated argument and pushing were witnessed during the protest. Police have alleged that some personnel on duty were subjected to physical confrontation and that their official work was obstructed during the incident.

Apart from Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, action has also been initiated against other Congress leaders and workers who were present during the demonstration. Police are examining video footage and other available evidence to establish the sequence of events and determine the role of different individuals.

The protest was organised by opposition parties over their demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Several opposition leaders and MPs participated in the demonstration. The parties raised concerns related to the electoral process and voter lists and sought to register their opposition through the protest.

Tension increased when buses carrying opposition MPs were stopped around Janpath. Opposition leaders were attempting to proceed towards Jantar Mantar, while police officials tried to prevent them from moving forward. The confrontation resulted in arguments and a physical scuffle between some protesters and police personnel.

During the demonstration, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra sat on the road along with several women leaders. She was also seen carrying a copy of the Constitution. Police later removed her and other protesters from the road and took several people into custody. Security arrangements were strengthened in the area as the protest continued.

Delhi Police officials said that 91 people were detained during the demonstration. Several MPs and senior opposition leaders were among those detained. The protest was led by Rahul Gandhi and saw participation from leaders and MPs belonging to several opposition parties, including the Congress, Trinamool Congress, CPI-M, CPI, RJD and IUML.

The latest FIR is being described as the second case registered against Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in connection with the protests. A separate case had earlier been registered against the two over allegations related to entering the All India Radio premises and creating a disturbance.

Police have said that protesters were stopped to prevent disruption of public order and traffic movement. Officials are now examining video recordings and other evidence from the protest to determine whether police personnel were assaulted and whether their official duties were obstructed.

Opposition parties, meanwhile, maintain that they were holding a democratic protest to raise concerns over the electoral process and demand the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner. The opposition has described the demonstration as an exercise of its democratic and constitutional rights.

The police and opposition sides have therefore presented different accounts of the events. The investigation will now focus on the available video footage, statements and other evidence. Further action will depend on the findings of the investigation and the role attributed to individual protesters.
