Explosion in Chhattisgarh's Sukma Injures Four CRPF Personnel

An accident occurred in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh during an operation to destroy unused and leftover explosives, leaving four personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) injured. According to officials, the personnel were involved in the controlled disposal of explosives when an unexpected blast took place. Two of the injured personnel, both Assistant Sub-Inspectors, are reported to be in serious condition. The injured were given immediate first aid and taken to a hospital for further treatment.

According to the police, the incident occurred on the evening of Thursday, October 8, near the Elarmadgu security camp in the jurisdiction of Bhejji police station in Sukma district. A specialised technical team was carrying out the work of inspecting explosives and disposing of unused or leftover material. The team had reached the area to inspect different security camps and ensure that explosives no longer required for use were destroyed in accordance with the prescribed safety procedures. The operation was underway when the sudden explosion occurred.

The four injured personnel have been identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector M. K. Tiwari, Inspector Amarnath Mishra, Assistant Sub-Inspector Anees Khan and Head Constable Kuldeep Raj. Tiwari and Mishra were members of the Ammunition Technical Team (ATT), while Anees Khan and Kuldeep Raj are associated with the CRPF's 50th Battalion. Officials said that both Assistant Sub-Inspectors sustained serious injuries. Further details about the medical condition of the other injured personnel have not been provided in the available information.

Immediately after the explosion, the injured personnel received first aid at the scene. They were subsequently taken to the government hospital in Konta, where treatment is underway. Arrangements are also being made to transfer the seriously injured personnel to another hospital for more advanced medical care. The priority following the incident has been to ensure that the injured receive timely treatment and the medical support required for their recovery.

Officials said that the Ammunition Technical Team of the CRPF's 50th Battalion had travelled from Jagdalpur to the Elarmadgu camp in the Konta area. The team's assignment was to inspect security camps and safely dispose of explosives that were no longer required or had been left over. The safe handling and disposal of such material are important responsibilities for security forces because improperly stored or handled explosives can pose a risk of accidental detonation.

The team was reportedly carrying out the disposal operation near the Bodrajpadar stream, approximately 200 metres from the security camp. The work was being conducted according to the prescribed safety procedures. During the operation, however, a fragment of an explosive reportedly flew away and landed nearby, where it detonated. The resulting blast injured the four personnel present in the area. The available information does not establish why the fragment travelled away from the disposal site or what technical factor triggered the explosion.

Sukma is part of the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, where security forces carry out a range of security-related duties and operations. Handling and disposing of explosives in such areas requires specialised training, careful inspection and strict adherence to safety procedures. The incident highlights the risks that can arise even during technical operations intended to remove unused explosives safely. The use of appropriate protective equipment, controlled disposal methods and careful handling is essential to reduce the risk of accidents during such tasks.

The four injured personnel are currently receiving medical attention. Officials have said that arrangements are being made to move the two seriously injured Assistant Sub-Inspectors to another hospital for better treatment. Further information about the circumstances of the explosion may clarify the technical cause of the incident. For now, the immediate priority remains the medical care and recovery of the injured CRPF personnel.
