Delhi Police Proposes Closure of 57 Metro Stations Amid Protests

Security arrangements in Delhi have been stepped up ahead of protests scheduled for Saturday, October 10. In view of the planned demonstrations around Jantar Mantar and sensitive areas of New Delhi, Delhi Police has written to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), requesting the temporary closure of 57 metro stations. According to the information available, the proposed restrictions would begin at 9 PM on October 9 and remain in place until the situation returns to normal on October 10. However, the final operational decision and the actual duration of any closures should be confirmed through an official DMRC announcement.

Rajnish Gupta, Joint Commissioner of Police for the Transport Range, has reportedly written to the managing director of DMRC regarding the proposed restrictions. The request was made as a precautionary measure to maintain security and manage passenger movement during the demonstrations. Police authorities anticipate that a large number of protesters may gather in and around central Delhi. This could increase pressure on public transport facilities, roads and areas surrounding important government and public locations.

The proposed demonstrations have been called by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). At the same time, protests led by the Congress and the opposition INDIA alliance have also been taking place. With several political groups mobilising supporters, the police are preparing for possible crowd congestion and disruptions in areas around Jantar Mantar and New Delhi. The arrangements are intended to help manage the movement of people, maintain public order and reduce the risk of overcrowding at metro stations located near protest sites.

Previous demonstrations are also believed to be a factor behind the precautionary measures. According to the information provided, a CJP protest in July significantly affected movement and traffic in the New Delhi district. Despite the arrangements made by the police, thousands of protesters reportedly reached the area, and some metro stations had to be closed at that time. Authorities appear to be preparing earlier this time to manage crowds and avoid similar difficulties during the planned demonstrations.

Traffic congestion is another concern for Saturday. If large numbers of people gather around Jantar Mantar and other sensitive locations, vehicle movement on major roads could slow down, potentially causing long queues and delays. If the proposed metro closures are implemented, commuters may have to use alternative stations, buses or other forms of transport to reach their destinations. The restrictions could particularly affect office workers, students and people who depend on the metro for regular travel across Delhi and the National Capital Region.

The list of 57 stations proposed for closure includes several important and busy locations. These include Janpath, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Lok Kalyan Marg, Rajiv Chowk, Seva Teerth, formerly known as Udyog Bhawan, Mandi House, Barakhamba Road, ITO, Delhi Gate, Khan Market, RK Ashram Marg, Jhandewalan, Supreme Court and Indraprastha. Other stations named in the proposal are Shivaji Stadium, INA, Hauz Khas, Jor Bagh, Arjan Garh, Sarai Kale Khan–Nizamuddin, Lajpat Nagar, Jangpura, Ashram, Kalindi Kunj, Jasola, Jamia Millia Islamia and Okhla Vihar.

The proposed list also includes Chawri Bazar, Jama Masjid, Karol Bagh, Rajendra Place, Vishwavidyalaya, Vidhan Sabha, Civil Lines, Kashmere Gate, Inderlok, GTB Nagar, Kanhaiya Nagar, Netaji Subhash Place, Azadpur, Adarsh Nagar, Jahangirpuri, Haiderpur Badli Mor and Majlis Park. Shalimar Bagh, Seelampur, Maujpur, Jafrabad, Welcome, Yamuna Vihar, Khajuri Khas, Shahdara, Rithala, Rohini East and Rohini West are also included. Both metro lines serving INA are specifically mentioned in the supplied list.

Commuters should check official metro service updates before beginning their journeys. A request made by the police does not necessarily mean that DMRC has already implemented every proposed closure. The final arrangements, including which stations will be closed and for how long, depend on the official decision. Passengers travelling through central Delhi should allow extra time, consider alternative routes and remain alert to traffic advisories and security instructions.

The proposed restrictions are part of broader precautionary arrangements for managing public movement during the demonstrations. Authorities are seeking to reduce congestion around sensitive locations and maintain security while the protests take place. For the most accurate information about station operations, commuters should rely on official DMRC announcements and updates from the relevant authorities.
