DA Hike: Centre Approves Dearness Allowance Increase for Government Employees and Pensioners Ahead of Diwali

Centre Announces 3% DA Increase

The central government has announced relief for central government employees and pensioners by approving a 3 percentage-point increase in Dearness Allowance (DA). The decision, approved by the Union Cabinet, is expected to benefit millions of people covered under the applicable provisions.

Dearness Allowance is paid to eligible government employees to help offset the impact of rising living costs. The allowance is calculated as a percentage of basic salary. When the DA rate increases, the amount employees receive in addition to their basic pay also rises.

Eligible pensioners may benefit through a corresponding revision in Dearness Relief (DR), subject to the relevant government order and applicable rules.

How Will the Increase Affect Salaries?

The additional amount employees receive will depend on their basic salary and the applicable revised DA rate. For example, if an employee has a basic salary of ₹30,000 per month, an additional three percentage points would amount to ₹900 per month.

This is an illustrative calculation. The actual increase in take-home salary will depend on the previous DA rate, the revised rate, the effective date and other applicable salary components.

Pensioners may also see an increase in their pension if the corresponding Dearness Relief revision applies to them. The exact benefit will depend on the applicable pension amount and official provisions.

Why Is Dearness Allowance Revised?

Dearness Allowance is intended to help government employees manage the impact of inflation on everyday expenses. Rising prices for food, transport, housing and essential services can reduce household purchasing power. Periodic revisions to DA are intended to help offset some of that pressure.

The central government reviews DA rates from time to time. Following an announcement, employees and pensioners generally look for details about the effective date, revised rate and any arrears payable under the official order.

What Should Employees and Pensioners Check?

Following the approval, the effective date and payment arrangements will be important details for beneficiaries. Any arrears, where applicable, will depend on the period covered by the official order and the individual's eligibility.

Employees should check their salary statements, while pensioners can review their pension payment details to confirm the revised amount once the applicable order is implemented.

Overall, the 3 percentage-point DA increase is expected to provide additional financial support to eligible central government employees. Pensioners may also benefit from the corresponding relief revision, subject to official provisions
