Amid efforts to reduce tensions along the India-China border, the Defence Ministry has reported a significant reduction in the deployment of China's People's Liberation Army along the Line of Actual Control during 2025.
According to the ministry, the level of PLA deployment opposite India's northern borders declined considerably during the year. However, the reduction does not mean that China's military presence along the LAC has ended.
The ministry said that 10 combined arms brigade-sized formations remained deployed in areas adjoining the LAC and in traditional training areas. The continued presence of these formations indicates that China maintains a significant military capability in areas close to the disputed boundary.
At the same time, the Indian Army has maintained a strong deployment across all sectors of the LAC. The Defence Ministry said that Indian forces remain adequately positioned and prepared to respond to any sudden situation along the border.
Dialogue Between India and China Resumes
The reduction in military deployment has taken place alongside renewed diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
The Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination, known as WMCC, held its 33rd and 34th meetings in March and July 2025 respectively. The mechanism provides a platform for officials from both countries to discuss border-related concerns and maintain communication.
Dialogue between the Special Representatives of India and China on the boundary question also resumed. Meetings were held in December 2024 and August 2025.
The resumption of these talks is being viewed as an important development after years of military tensions along the LAC.
Military-Level Engagement Continues
Communication between the two militaries has also continued. According to the Defence Ministry, the 23rd Corps Commander-level meeting was held in eastern Ladakh on October 25 and 26, 2025.
Border Personnel Meetings between Indian and Chinese officials have also continued in different sectors. The ministry said these interactions have been taking place in a cordial and friendly environment while the two sides continue to address issues of concern.
Such meetings are aimed at preventing local developments along the border from escalating into larger confrontations.
India Maintains Strong Border Preparedness
Despite the reported reduction in Chinese deployment, India has continued to maintain a strong military posture along the LAC.
The Defence Ministry said that Indian forces remain prepared to deal with any sudden development. This approach reflects India's continued focus on maintaining operational readiness even as diplomatic and military engagement with China improves.
The issue remains important because India and China have experienced prolonged military tensions along the LAC in recent years. Large numbers of troops and military equipment had previously been deployed in several sensitive areas, particularly in eastern Ladakh.
Against this background, the reported reduction in Chinese deployment could indicate a decline in the level of military tension. However, India's continued readiness suggests that New Delhi remains cautious about the security situation. Modi-Xi Meeting Signals Further Engagement
The latest developments also come against the backdrop of renewed political engagement between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The two leaders held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS summit. The meeting lasted for more than 50 minutes and focused on bilateral relations and areas of cooperation.
Prime Minister Modi welcomed Xi Jinping and highlighted the opportunity to discuss bilateral cooperation between India and China.
Xi Jinping said that China views India-China relations from a strategic and long-term perspective. He also called for both countries to work together for shared development.
The Chinese president noted that China and India are the world's two most populous countries and important members of the Global South. He said that the two countries have significant responsibilities in a complex international environment marked by multiple changes and challenges.
Stability After Years of Border Tensions
The developments along the LAC are significant because the India-China relationship has been affected by the prolonged border tensions of recent years.
The military deployment, diplomatic dialogue and economic relationship between the two countries have all been influenced by the boundary dispute.
The reduction in PLA deployment, renewed meetings between military officials and the resumption of talks between Special Representatives are being viewed as possible signs of greater stability.
However, the reduction in troop deployment does not mean that the boundary dispute has been resolved. Several issues between the two countries remain subject to negotiations.
India's continued military preparedness along all sectors of the LAC also indicates that the country remains cautious and does not intend to compromise on border security.
The coming months will therefore be important in determining whether the current stability can be sustained and whether India and China can make further progress towards resolving their outstanding boundary-related concerns.
