The student protest in Ranchi over alleged irregularities and paper leaks in JPSC and JSSC recruitment examinations continued to intensify on Monday. A large group of protesting students reached near the Jharkhand Assembly and began a sit-in, raising slogans against the state government.
The protesters are demanding action over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations and have reiterated their demand for a CBI investigation. They are also insisting that the JSSC CGL examination be cancelled.
The Assembly gherao was organized as part of the continuing student movement. Security arrangements across Ranchi were tightened in view of the planned demonstration, with multiple barricades and additional police personnel deployed around sensitive areas.
Students Reach Near Assembly and Stage Sit-In
After moving through several routes toward the Assembly, a large group of protesters reached close to the Assembly premises and sat down in protest.
The students raised slogans against the government and said they would continue their agitation until their major demands were addressed.
Some protesters were also seen moving through fields and alternative routes while attempting to reach the Assembly. Police teams were deployed at several locations to monitor the movement and prevent protesters from entering restricted areas.
The protesters maintained that their movement was aimed at seeking transparency and fairness in the recruitment examination process.
Tension Near Final Barricade
The situation became tense when protesters reached the final barricading point. Police attempted to stop the students from moving further while officials continued discussions with representatives of the protesters.
According to the police, the students agreed to stop temporarily after discussions with the authorities. However, the situation escalated when some protesters attempted to break through the final barricade.
Police said a mild baton charge was used to prevent the barricade from being breached further.
There were also reports of protesters throwing footwear toward the police. Stone-pelting was subsequently reported at the site, during which a police personnel reportedly suffered a head injury.
Additional police personnel were deployed after the incident as authorities attempted to bring the situation under control.
Former JPSC Chairman Arrested
Amid the student Assembly march, investigative authorities arrested former JPSC chairman L Khiyangte.
According to the information available, he was arrested from his residence and taken to the investigation agency’s police station. He was expected to be produced before a court as part of the legal process.
The arrest came at a time when a major student movement was underway in Ranchi over alleged irregularities in JPSC and JSSC recruitment examinations.
The legal proceedings related to the arrest are expected to determine the next course of action in the case.
BJP Leaders Protest in Support of Students
BJP leaders and workers also held demonstrations in support of the protesting students.
State BJP president Aditya Sahu said the party would stand with the youth in their demand for justice. He said the future and rights of young people could not be ignored and that the struggle would continue until their concerns were addressed.
BJP workers also staged a demonstration near the Chief Minister’s residence and demanded a CBI investigation into alleged irregularities associated with JPSC and JSSC recruitment examinations.
The protesters also raised demands concerning the Chief Minister, while accusing the state government of failing to adequately address the concerns of young aspirants.
JAKM MLA Says Students' Voice Will Be Raised
JAKM MLA Jairam Kumar Mahto reached the area near the barricading in front of the Assembly and expressed support for the protesting students.
He said the voice of the students would not be suppressed and that their concerns would be raised inside the Assembly.
According to him, issues concerning recruitment examinations and the future of young people need to be discussed seriously by the government.
Devendranath Mahto Questions Barricading
Student leader Devendranath Mahto, who has been associated with the ongoing agitation, questioned the heavy security arrangements around the Assembly.
He said that despite not being in good health, he could not stop himself from joining the students’ protest.
Mahto questioned the use of sharp barricades and asked why such extreme security measures were being used against students. He argued that the protesters were students demanding their rights and answers regarding recruitment examinations.
His remarks reflected the growing frustration among protesters over the security arrangements and restrictions placed around the Assembly area.
Students Question Police Restrictions
Several students participating in the Assembly march also raised questions about the police checks imposed before they reached Ranchi.
One protester claimed that students were stopped at several points before reaching the city. He alleged that buses were checked and that motorcycles were also subjected to strict inspections.
The student said the measures appeared aimed at preventing protesters from reaching the demonstration site.
He maintained that the protesters would not leave the area until an order for a CBI investigation was issued.
Another student claimed that the registration number of his vehicle was noted during the journey. He questioned whether protesting students were being treated as security threats and asked why the government appeared to be distancing itself from young people.
What Are the Students Demanding?
The protesters have primarily demanded cancellation of the JSSC CGL examination and a CBI investigation into alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations.
They have also raised concerns over alleged paper leaks and demanded greater transparency in the recruitment examination process.
Student organizations argue that recruitment examinations must be conducted fairly and transparently. They want an independent investigation into allegations of irregularities and appropriate action against anyone found responsible.
Talks Have Not Ended the Protest
Several rounds of discussions have taken place between representatives of the government and the protesting students. Although the government has made proposals on some issues, the students maintain that their major demands have not been fully resolved.
The protesters have therefore continued their Assembly gherao and sit-in.
Student representatives have also emphasized that verbal assurances alone would not be enough. They want important decisions and commitments from the government to be provided in writing before considering an end to the agitation.
Security Tightened Around Assembly
Security arrangements have been significantly strengthened around the Jharkhand Assembly. Multiple barricades have been installed, and additional police teams have been deployed at strategic locations.
Police officials have repeatedly appealed to the protesters to remain peaceful and avoid crossing security barriers.
