The West Bengal government on Monday presented its first full budget for the financial year 2026-27, announcing several key measures focused on employment, welfare, and infrastructure development.
A major highlight of the budget was the announcement of recruitment for 100,000 vacant government positions across the state. The government said that 33 percent of these jobs would be reserved for women.
The budget also proposed a 20 percent increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for state government employees and pensioners, taking the total DA to 38 percent. The revised rates will come into effect from April 1, 2026.
To support women commuters, the government allocated ₹550 crore for a free bus service scheme. Beneficiaries will receive special pink cards to access the service.
The administration also announced that all ongoing welfare schemes would continue. Retired journalists will receive a monthly pension of ₹5,000, while remuneration for state transport bus conductors will also be increased.
Under development initiatives, ₹14,000 crore has been earmarked for the GRAMG scheme. The government also plans to establish Kanthi as a new police district, create Gopiballabhpur as a new subdivision, and set up additional fire stations across the state.
To improve transparency, all mining leases in the state will be auctioned through the central government's e-auction system.
