Big Decision Today on Free Bus Travel for Women in Delhi, Pink Card Deadline May Extend

A major decision regarding free bus travel for women in Delhi is expected today as the current deadline for obtaining the Pink Saheli Smart Card is set to end on August 31. The authorities are considering extending the deadline once again as a large number of women are still approaching designated facilities to obtain the smart card.

Women are currently entitled to free travel on Delhi Transport Corporation and cluster buses. The facility has traditionally been provided through a paper-based pink ticket system. The government is now moving towards a digital mechanism under the Pink Saheli Smart Card scheme, with the objective of gradually reducing dependence on paper tickets.

The Pink Saheli Smart Card is based on the National Common Mobility Card system and is intended to provide women with a digital means of accessing the free bus travel facility. The move is aimed at making the process more streamlined and bringing the existing free-travel system into a digital framework.

The deadline for making the smart card mandatory was initially fixed for August 1. However, considering the number of women who had not yet obtained the card, the deadline was first extended to August 16. It was subsequently extended again to August 31.

With the current deadline now reaching its end, a fresh decision is awaited regarding the arrangements that will apply from September 1. The authorities are examining whether women should be given additional time to obtain the Pink Saheli Smart Card before the paper-ticket system is phased out completely.

According to available figures from the transport department, 1,813,866 Pink Saheli Smart Cards have been issued so far. Despite the large number of cards already issued, women are still visiting centres to obtain the smart card. This continued demand is one of the key reasons behind the possibility of another extension.

If the deadline is extended, women who have not yet obtained the smart card will get additional time to complete the process. This could also help the authorities ensure that more eligible passengers are brought into the digital system before the smart card becomes the primary mechanism for accessing the free travel facility.

The Pink Saheli Smart Card scheme was launched on March 2. The scheme is designed to transition women's free bus travel from a paper-based system to a digital system. By using a smart card, the authorities aim to create a more organised mechanism for recording and managing journeys.

The shift to a digital system could also make it easier to maintain travel-related records and streamline the implementation of the free travel programme. At the same time, ensuring that eligible women have sufficient access and time to obtain the smart card remains important for a smooth transition.

The immediate question is whether the August 31 deadline will remain final or whether women will receive additional time. The continued arrival of women to obtain the card has increased the possibility of another extension.

The final decision is expected to clarify how the free travel facility will operate after August 31, whether paper-based pink tickets will continue for some more time and how long women who have not yet obtained the smart card will have to complete the registration process.

Until a new order is issued, women using the free travel facility will have to follow the applicable system announced by the authorities. The decision on the deadline will determine the next stage of Delhi's transition from paper-based free travel to a digital smart-card-based system.
