The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strengthened its political position in Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s home district of Hamirpur by securing the top two posts in the District Council.
BJP-backed Anita Devi was elected unopposed as the District Council president, while Gurdeep Singh was chosen unopposed as vice president after the party secured overwhelming support among elected members.
The party had earlier won a commanding majority in the District Council elections, with BJP-backed candidates emerging victorious in most of the 19 wards. Congress managed to win only one seat, while several independent winners are also considered close to the BJP.
Ahead of the leadership election, BJP leaders held a series of meetings to finalise candidates through consensus. The strategy helped avoid internal competition and ensured unanimous elections for both key posts.
The newly elected president and vice president thanked all District Council members for their support and pledged to work collectively for rural development and public welfare. They said priority would be given to strengthening infrastructure and addressing local issues across the district.
