A fresh political controversy has erupted in Jammu and Kashmir after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah received a legal notice from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), warning of a ₹100 crore defamation lawsuit.
During a rally in Srinagar on July 11, Omar Abdullah alleged that the BJP was attempting to topple his government. He claimed that some legislators were offered ₹20–30 crore, ministerial positions, and a promise to restore Jammu and Kashmir's statehood if they joined the BJP.
Following these allegations, the Jammu and Kashmir BJP issued a legal notice, calling the claims false, baseless, and defamatory. The party has asked Omar Abdullah to withdraw his statement and issue an unconditional apology within seven days, failing which it will initiate civil and criminal proceedings, including a ₹100 crore defamation suit.
Responding to the notice, Omar Abdullah described it as a "love letter" and said he considered it an honour. He also stated that his party would now send legal notices to leaders making baseless allegations against them.
It remains to be seen whether the matter reaches the courts or remains confined to political rhetoric.
