Kolkata: In a setback for Mamata Banerjee's camp, the Calcutta High Court has refused to grant an interim stay on the West Bengal Assembly Speaker's decision recognizing rebel TMC legislator Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of the Opposition.
Justice Krishna Rao declined to issue any interim order and directed both sides to submit their affidavits before the next hearing, which has been scheduled for July 28.
The dispute stems from a growing political rift within the Trinamool Congress. Ritabrata Banerjee, who was expelled from the party, claimed the support of 58 rebel MLAs and formed a separate faction that supports Mamata Banerjee but opposes the influence of Abhishek Banerjee.
Amid the political standoff, Assembly Speaker Rathendra Bose accepted the rebel faction's claim and recognized Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of the Opposition, replacing Mamata camp nominee Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay.
Mamata Banerjee's faction challenged the Speaker's decision in court, arguing that it undermined the officially recognized party structure and violated constitutional principles. However, until a final verdict is delivered, Ritabrata Banerjee will continue to hold the position.
