Chandrashekhar's Party Makes Strong Showing in Datia Bypoll

The results of the Datia Assembly by-election in Madhya Pradesh have drawn attention not only because of the Congress victory but also due to the performance of the Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram), led by MP Chandrashekhar Azad.

Congress candidate Ghanshyam Singh won the by-election with 66,757 votes, defeating BJP candidate Ashutosh Tiwari by a margin of 6,016 votes. Ashutosh Tiwari secured 60,741 votes, while Azad Samaj Party candidate Damodar Yadav Mandal finished third with 22,527 votes, securing a vote share of approximately 14.3%.

Reacting to the result, Damodar Yadav Mandal said that his party fought against the influence of money, power, and the ruling establishment. He thanked party workers and supporters, stating that the election had laid a strong political foundation for the Azad Samaj Party in Datia.

Damodar Yadav Mandal is a member of the National Core Committee of the Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) and has been associated with organizations representing Dalit and backward communities. Political observers believe that securing a double-digit vote share despite limited organizational strength is a significant achievement for the party.

After his victory, Congress leader Ghanshyam Singh said he had been confident of winning the election and credited the people of Datia for supporting change. He also claimed that some local BJP workers quietly supported his campaign, though he clarified that former minister Narottam Mishra did not personally back him.

The BJP had fielded Ashutosh Tiwari after Narottam Mishra was denied a ticket, a decision that had triggered dissatisfaction among a section of party workers. The by-election result has once again sparked discussion over the political impact of that decision.
