Cow Owners May Get New Income Source as UP Plans Expansion of Urine Dairy Model

The pilot project was started in Narsena village of Syana tehsil in Bulandshahr. Around 15 nearby villages have been connected to the initiative.

Collection centres have been established in the villages, where cow urine is currently being purchased at 10 rupees per litre. Around 500 litres of cow urine is being collected every day through these centres.

The initiative also focuses on women empowerment. Around 300 women have been associated with the project. Women helping collect cow urine from villages receive a 2-rupee commission per litre.

The collected cow urine is mixed with herbs and other ingredients to prepare pest-control products and other agricultural products for organic farming. These products are then supplied to farmers through cooperative societies.

What is the next step?
Based on the experience of the Bulandshahr pilot project, the government is preparing to expand the model across Uttar Pradesh. Farmer Producer Organizations, or FPOs, will be trained and a network of cow urine collection centres is expected to be developed in villages.

The government is also exploring the possibility of increasing the purchase price to 20 rupees per litre in the future. The aim is to create an additional source of income for cattle owners while linking cow protection with the rural economy and organic farming.
