A powerful earthquake struck western Venezuela on Wednesday, causing severe destruction across several areas near the capital, Caracas. Buildings collapsed, people were trapped under debris, and emergency teams were rushed to affected locations.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck about 160 kilometres west of Caracas. Less than a minute later, a second and stronger quake measuring 7.5 magnitude hit the region.
Preliminary estimates suggest the death toll could range between 10,000 and 100,000 people, although authorities have not yet confirmed any official casualty figures.
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez declared a nationwide state of emergency and expressed condolences to families affected by the disaster. She said the government is mobilising all available resources to support rescue and relief operations.
Emergency response teams have been deployed to search for survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings and damaged structures. Local officials reported extensive damage, with the number of injured continuing to rise.
Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello said authorities are using every available resource to manage the crisis and assist affected communities.
The United States has offered assistance following the disaster, with officials confirming that they are in contact with Venezuelan authorities to coordinate relief efforts.
Hospitals in Caracas have activated emergency protocols and increased staffing levels to treat the growing number of casualties. Venezuela’s largest airport has also been temporarily closed due to safety concerns.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and said India stands ready to provide any assistance required during this difficult time.
