The impact of El Nino has become increasingly visible across India with the country recording a 42 percent rainfall deficit during June making it the third driest June in the last century.
According to the India Meteorological Department the country received only 92.2 millimetres of rainfall against the normal average of 157.7 millimetres during the month.
Historical weather records show that only 2009 and 2014 witnessed lower June rainfall than this year. Central India recorded the sharpest deficit at 54 percent followed by eastern and northeastern India at 41 percent northwestern India at 30 percent and southern India at 28 percent.
Climate experts say the warming of the Pacific Ocean due to El Nino has weakened monsoon circulation resulting in significantly lower rainfall across the country.
The IMD expects monsoon activity to strengthen during the first week of July bringing widespread rainfall to central India and several other regions.
