The European Union is set to host Taliban officials in Brussels on Tuesday for discussions focused on Afghan migration and the return of asylum seekers whose applications have been rejected across Europe.
Belgium has granted five Taliban delegates one-day visas following security assessments, allowing them to participate in the meeting.
According to the European Commission, the talks will focus on irregular migration from Afghanistan and the return and readmission of Afghan nationals who do not have the legal right to remain in EU member states.
The Commission emphasized that the meeting does not amount to formal recognition of the Taliban administration, which returned to power in Afghanistan in August 2021.
European governments have increasingly adopted tougher migration policies as public concern over immigration continues to grow. Several member states are seeking ways to deport individuals whose asylum claims have been denied, particularly those considered security risks or convicted of serious crimes.
European Commission spokesperson Markus Lammert said member states are examining options to return individuals who pose security threats or have committed serious criminal offences.
Human rights organizations have criticized the planned talks, arguing that Afghanistan remains unsafe and that engagement with the Taliban should focus on protecting human rights rather than facilitating deportations.
Afghanistan continues to face a severe humanitarian crisis, with millions struggling with food insecurity while also absorbing large numbers of returnees from neighboring countries.
