The 'Lahra Do Tiranga' demonstration organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Azad Maidan in Mumbai witnessed a limited turnout on Friday. According to the information available, around 50 to 150 people attended the protest at different times during the day. The one-day demonstration was organised in support of party co-conveners and founders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das, who were recently arrested. Participants gathered at the venue with national flags, photographs of Bhagat Singh and political posters criticising the administration.
Supporters began arriving at the protest site after around 10 am. A significant police presence was deployed near the entrance to the venue as the gathering got underway. Demonstrators assembled in smaller groups and continued their activities throughout the day. While the crowd grew slightly during speeches, the number of people present declined again by the afternoon.
Protesters Carry National Flags and Political Posters
Several demonstrators were seen carrying the national flag and photographs of Bhagat Singh. Political posters criticising the administration were also displayed during the protest. Sheets had been spread at different spots across the ground, with books and literature placed on them for supporters and other visitors to view.
Through the gathering, organisers sought to draw attention to their political demands and express solidarity with the arrested party leaders. Speakers criticised the authorities over the arrests and appealed to people to become more informed about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. Despite these efforts, the overall attendance remained limited throughout the event.
Organisers Initially Planned a Protest at Gateway of India
CJP member Rupali Kudtarkar said the party would continue holding daily demonstrations until Gyanesh Kumar resigned. She also explained that the party had initially planned to stage the protest at the Gateway of India. According to her, however, the police insisted that the demonstration be held at Azad Maidan instead.
Kudtarkar further said that permission was granted later in the evening for the participants to visit the Gateway of India and take a photograph. Her statement indicated that the party intended to continue raising its demands through protests. However, detailed information about the schedule and scale of any future demonstrations was not immediately available.
Speakers Raise Concerns Over Arrests and the SIR Process
During the demonstration, speakers criticised the administration over the arrests of Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das. They also urged people to learn more about the SIR process and understand its implications. Participants used speeches and political posters to communicate the party's concerns and demands.
The gathering remained relatively small during the morning, with people arriving in separate groups. Attendance increased somewhat during the speeches but fell again as the afternoon progressed. Organisers used the event to publicly express their opposition to the arrests and reiterate their intention to continue the protest campaign.
Demonstration Concludes at 5 pm
The 'Lahra Do Tiranga' demonstration at Azad Maidan concluded at around 5 pm. Police personnel remained deployed at the venue during the event, while protesters gathered within the designated area. The attendance remained limited, with no large crowd forming at the site during the day.
The demonstration focused primarily on expressing support for the arrested party leaders and raising awareness about the SIR process. Organisers said they intended to continue their protests over their demands. Further details about the party's next steps and the schedule of any future demonstrations have not yet been announced.
