The Central Government has directed app stores to remove two Chinese applications, BAT-BMS, following concerns that they could remotely disable e-rickshaws, raising serious cybersecurity and public safety issues.
IT Secretary S. Krishnan confirmed that the government became aware of the applications and acted swiftly to ensure their removal. Speaking at the CII Cyber Security Summit, he said authorities would continue engaging with app store operators to prevent the availability of applications that could pose security threats.
The issue gained attention after reports claimed that e-rickshaws equipped with the BAT-BMS management system could allegedly be switched off remotely through the apps. The reports triggered concerns over the security risks associated with internet-connected vehicle management systems and the potential misuse of such technology.
The government said it will continue monitoring digital platforms to ensure that applications capable of compromising public safety or national cybersecurity standards are not made available to users.
