Kharge Upset Over Silence on Purification Row, Seeks Stronger Support

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has reportedly expressed his displeasure over what he perceived as inadequate support from party leaders following the controversy surrounding an alleged purification ritual at the venue of his rally in Haldwani, Uttarakhand.

The issue was discussed during the Congress Working Committee meeting held in Delhi on Wednesday. According to reports, Kharge told party leaders present at the meeting that he was hurt by the fact that several CWC members had not openly condemned the incident or publicly supported him on the issue.

Kharge was referring to an incident that took place after he addressed the Vijay Shankhnaad rally at the Ramlila Maidan in Haldwani on August 8. Two days later, on August 10, members of the right-wing organisation Shri Ram Sena reportedly performed a purification havan at the same venue.

The incident triggered a political controversy. Congress leaders strongly objected to the reported ritual and described it as unacceptable and condemnable. The party argued that carrying out such a ritual after a political event reflected a discriminatory mindset and raised serious questions about social equality.

During the CWC meeting, Kharge reportedly did not name any particular Congress leader. However, sources suggested that his remarks reflected disappointment with some senior leaders who, according to him, had not taken a strong public position on the controversy.

Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal also spoke about the issue after the meeting. He described the incident as unacceptable and condemnable and alleged that it reflected the mindset of the BJP. Congress leaders further alleged that those involved in the ritual had links with organisations associated with the BJP and RSS.

The BJP, however, distanced itself from the incident and condemned the reported action by the right-wing organisation. The political disagreement therefore developed into a broader debate over social equality, caste discrimination and the manner in which political opponents respond to public events.

Kharge also raised the matter in Parliament on the final day of the Monsoon Session. The Congress leadership used the incident to highlight what it described as an attack on social dignity and equality.

The controversy has also drawn attention to the Congress's internal response to sensitive political and social issues. Kharge's remarks during the CWC meeting indicate that the party president expected senior leaders to respond more openly when issues involving social justice and discrimination arise.

The incident is significant for the Congress because Kharge has consistently highlighted issues concerning social justice and the rights of disadvantaged communities in his political interventions. His reported disappointment therefore also reflects a larger expectation within the party that senior leaders should maintain a united public position on such issues.

For now, the Haldwani controversy remains both a political issue between the Congress and BJP and a matter of discussion within the Congress organisation itself. Kharge's remarks at the CWC meeting suggest that the party leadership wants its senior leaders to respond more collectively and strongly to controversies involving social equality and discrimination.
