Workers at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles have threatened to go on strike if federal immigration enforcement agents are deployed during the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 matches.
The protest is being led by UNITE HERE Local 11, a labour union representing nearly 2,000 hospitality workers employed at the stadium. Union members are demanding guarantees that agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, commonly known as ICE, will not be present during tournament events.
The stadium, which will temporarily operate as “Los Angeles Stadium” during the World Cup, is scheduled to host eight matches, including the United States opening game on June 12.
Workers argue that the presence of ICE would create fear among employees and fans attending the global sporting event.
Speaking during a protest outside the venue, stadium worker Isaac Martinez said employees should not feel unsafe while traveling to and from work.
Union members also raised concerns about FIFA’s accreditation process, which requires workers to submit personal information before the tournament begins. Employees fear their data could potentially be shared with immigration authorities or intelligence agencies.
Protesters gathered outside the stadium carrying signs reading “Kick ICE Out of the World Cup” and symbolic footballs to draw attention to their demands.
The demonstration also received support from Tom Steyer, who criticised the idea of immigration enforcement being linked to an international sports event.
ICE has remained at the centre of debate in the United States over immigration enforcement policies introduced under President Donald Trump. Human rights groups have previously criticised the agency over enforcement operations conducted in several American cities.
The union stated that if agreements are not reached before the tournament, workers are prepared to organise a strike during the World Cup period.
