The Maharashtra government has announced a ban on the sale of Sting energy drinks and other similar stimulant products within a 500-metre radius of schools across the state. The decision aims to protect children from the potential health risks associated with high-caffeine and high-sugar beverages.
The announcement was made by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Minister Narhari Zirwal during the Assembly session while responding to a question raised by BJP MLA Vikram Pachpute.
The minister said health experts have expressed concerns over the excessive caffeine and sugar content in energy drinks, which may negatively affect children's physical and mental health. He added that the FDA has been directed to strictly enforce the ban.
Schools have also been instructed to conduct awareness programmes educating students about the health risks linked to energy drink consumption.
The minister warned that strict action would be taken against anyone found selling Sting energy drinks or other intoxicating products within 500 metres of school premises.
During the discussion, legislators also urged the government to consider restricting the sale of energy drinks to minors below 18 years of age and to introduce stronger measures to limit children's access to such products.
